146 – Pathways to Treaty Relations

June 25, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Treaty 1 (signed 146 years ago at Lower Fort Garry) is an invitation to share the land for the benefit of all
living things. Come learn about how this sacred commitment can breathe new life into our relationships
with one another and the world around us. Come out to Lower Fort Garry for an afternoon of treaty talk and learning
in the historic village where Treaty 1 was signed.

1:00-4:00: Workshops
4:00-6:00: Picnic Bagged Lunch at Little Britain United Church (5879 Provincial Trunk Hwy 9, Lockport, just a short walk from Lower Fort Garry).

Workshop Presenters:
Jennifer Preston – In 2015 Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) released their
Final Report and 94 Calls to Action, related to the legacy of Indian Residential Schools. The TRC
called the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples “the framework for
reconciliation.” This presentation will provide an opportunity for people of Faith to find their
place in understanding both the TRC and the UN Declaration and the role of Settlers in the
journey of reconciliation.

Allen Sutherland – Focusing on the oral tradition of Treaty 1 and its spiritual foundations, this
presentation will utilize a historical timeline to draw connections between historical events and
present day issues that affect our understanding of treaty, social and legal issues, and ultimately
our relationships.

What to bring: $5*, a bagged lunch, a lawn chair and a friend!

*The annual payment of five dollars was a part of the treaty agreements in the 1870’s and to this day, every
person is handed five bucks by the Canadian Government staff at “treaty time”. We are inviting each person who
attends to bring a crisp $5 bill (if you are able) and to pay at the registration table. These funds will be used by
the Sandy Saulteaux Spiritual Centre to cover some of the costs of hosting this gathering.

Free busing is available from Knox United Church (return trip). Email to sign up.

146 Pathways to Treaty Relations is sponsored by: The Sandy-Saulteaux Spiritual Centre, Little Britain
United Church, Knox United Church, Selkirk Presbytery of the United Church of Canada, Manitoba and
Northwestern Ontario Conference of the United Church of Canada, Mennonite Church Canada, and
Mennonite Church Manitoba.
